It is traditionally recited as a practice of cultivating compassion, protection, healing, and relief from suffering.
Traditional spiritual benefits
1. Cultivating compassion
Repeatedly chanting the mantra is believed to strengthen the qualities represented by Kuan Yin—loving-kindness, mercy, patience and non-judgment.
2. Calming the mind
The rhythm and repetition can help settle scattered thoughts and bring the mind into a more peaceful, focused state.
3. Protection
The Great Compassion Mantra is often recited as a practice of spiritual protection, particularly when someone feels fearful, vulnerable or surrounded by difficult circumstances.
4. Relief from suffering
The mantra is traditionally connected with Kuan Yin's vow to hear the cries of suffering beings and respond with compassion. Practitioners may chant it when someone is experiencing grief, illness, fear, difficulty or emotional pain.
5. Purification
Many Buddhist traditions regard sincere recitation as helping to purify negative karma, harmful intentions and habitual patterns, particularly when chanting is accompanied by compassionate intention.
6. Supporting healing intentions People commonly dedicate the merit of chanting to someone who is unwell or suffering. This is a spiritual practice, rather than a substitute for medical treatment.
7. Developing inner strength
Regular practice can become an anchor during difficult periods, helping a person cultivate faith, acceptance, courage and compassion.
🕊️ Chanting for animals
The Da Bei Zhou can also be chanted for an animal. You can chant for the animal by connecting with the soul of the animal.
“May the merit of this chanting benefit this being. May they be free from suffering, fear and pain. May they be peaceful, protected and surrounded by compassion.”
